Petfinder.com is a great resource to find the pet you’ve been looking for. Most shelters participate, thus making it easy to locate a companion in your local area.

Dogs in Danger.com specifically lists dogs that are scheduled for euthanasia. Being a relatively new resource, many shelters are not yet participants. But if you are looking to save a dog whose time is running out, you should check this web site.
